No start date has been announced, but major road construction is on the way to the Minam area.
The Minam culvert and curve project on Wallowa Lake Highway in Union County near Milepost 30, 10.5 miles east of Elgin, has been awarded to Tidewater Contracting based of John Day.
Tidewater has worked with ODOT in Eastern Oregon before and bid the two-year project at approximately $4.2 million.
Although no timeline has been released, it is likely some work will be done this summer, according to ODOT Public Relations Officer Tom Strandberg.
The project will straighten the 25 mph. hairpin curve and move the highway as much as 275 feet into the hillside. The new roadway is expected to be posted at 40 mph.
Other construction includes stabilization of the new bank and installation of wire mesh and replacement of the culvert that drains runoff.
A pilot car will manage traffic during work hours with delays of 20 minutes or less possible. Blasting may require stoppage traffic in both directions for short periods of time.
