Gary William McBurney

July 24, 1943 –– May 5, 2018

Gary William “Daddy-O” McBurney, 74, of Independence, Ore., passed away in Salem surrounded by his family.

Son of Elizabeth Barbara Haener and Albert Allen McBurney, Gary was born in Dallas, Ore., the third of five children.

Gary married Linda Ruth Reaney Sept. 26, 1970. They welcomed the first son Travis Lee on Oct. 20, 1972, daughter Kelly Jo Nov. 9, 1974, and second son Brandon Feb. 17, 1977.

Gary began his career with Pacific Power, a Pacific Northwest utility company, in the late ‘60s, continuing until his retirement in the mid-90s. He lived in Joseph 1978-1983.

He was actively involved in his community through volunteering efforts including the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Grange, The Elks Club, The Lions Club, Battle Buddies, Treasure House Food Bank, Volunteer Fire Departments, and New York City 9-11 Clean Up Efforts.

His hobbies included coin-collecting, metal- detecting, canning local fruits and vegetables, playing pinochle and cribbage, Oregon Ducks football and volunteering his time.  Gary was an avid prankster and joke-teller.

He is survived by his children Travis McBurney, Kelly Wheeler and Brandon McBurney, his ex-wife Linda McBurney and his brothers Donald, Jimmy and Gerald McBurney and sister Darlene Lindmark.

A celebration of life is planned 1 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the Monmouth Senior Center, 180 Warren Street S., Monmouth.

The family kindly requests no flowers or gifts.  Donations can be made in Gary’s memory to the “Friends of the Monmouth Senior Center”.
