Aug. 28, 1950 –– Oct. 25, 2018
Gayle Ann (Hildebrandt) Schmeck left her worn out tent at Wallowa Memorial Hospital to receive her permanent dwelling above. She was born in San Francisco to Mildred Amanda (Ferrell), and Fred John Hildebrandt Jr., and grew up in Redwood City, Calif.; oldest of six children (Gayle, David and Darlene (twins), Lynn, Lisa, and Todd), graduating from Sequoia High School in 1968.
She earned an associate of arts in interior design at Cañada College in Redwood City in 1970. She went on to earn an associate of Christian arts from San Jose Bible College in 1972.
She married Timothy Jerome Schmeck Dec. 20, 1974, and began her family with James Fredrick Schmeck on June 15, 1977, followed by Anna Lisa Schmeck on June 28, 1982.
While Tim started Ministry in Santa Clara, Calif., Gayle continued work at Mel Cotton’s Sporting Goods. When James’ birth neared, Mel Cotton’s set up Tim with a new store to manage in Santa Clara. A year later they decided to move to Oregon to Tim’s hometown, Klamath Falls.
Tim had a ministry on Bly Mountain called “The Church in the Forest,” and they moved to a Swiss Chalet nearby in 1980. Eight years later, there was a church that needed help in Joseph named Mountain View Christian Church, where Gayle decorated, put on Valentine banquets, organized pot “trust” meals (there is no such thing as luck).
Gayle also drove kids to youth night, often called “Candy Church,” and delivered them home afterwards. In 1998, Gayle began working as a CNA at Wallowa County Nursing Home and later The Senior Living Center. She was working as fill-in just a month before her passing.
Mountain View Christian Church rejoined Enterprise Christian Church after a 30-year separation. Again Gayle had ministry in decorating the church on a weekly basis, as well as for special occasions. In her position as a care giver she helped train many others to do that work.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Darlene who bravely fought breast cancer 26 years. She is survived by her husband Tim, her son James Fredrick and his wife, Dara (Kanwischer); his son Eben James, and daughter Tovi Anne, all in Snohomish, Wash.
She is also survived by her daughter Anna Lisa and his husband Stephen Harvey, their children Aidan James and Anna Tegan, all in Pickerington, Ohio.
She has been interred at Joseph Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Enterprise Christian Church.
